What is energy psychology?
Energy psychology is based on the belief that mental and physical health is related to altered flow and function in the body’s electrical energies, sometimes called energy fields. The idea that the body’s electricity and energy can be modified to produce healing is at the root of many ancient and holistic approaches to medicine and wellness. Although this therapy is not embraced by all mental health practitioners and it is not considered to be the standard of care for any mental health disorders, research suggests that it may be a promising treatment. Over 60 studies have been published on the efficacy of energy psychology.
There are many ways to practice energy psychology; the approaches used the most at Thrive Health & Wellness use techniques based on acupuncture and acupressure, such as body tapping. This generally involves stimulation of the points on the body also targeted in acupuncture, which are known as meridian points (note that no needles are involved in energy psychology). The process is intended to send signals to the brain to help regulate emotions and well-being.
Although some practitioners use energy psychology as a stand-alone technique, at Thrive Health & Wellness, it is generally woven into the therapy process to support and add to other types of therapy (such as talk therapy and EMDR). The techniques used in energy psychology, such as tapping, can help clients better connect to the feelings, thoughts, and/or behaviors that a client wants to change in therapy. Once learned, these techniques are often something a client can implement outside of therapy sessions to help support themselves without assistance from the therapist.
Do all Thrive Health & Wellness clients use energy psychology?
No. At Thrive Health & Wellness, every client develops an individualized treatment plan with Dr. Giargiari. Some clients prefer to use only therapeutic techniques that are more widely accepted or considered to be standard of care for a given condition or concern. Every client has complete freedom to modify the approaches we use at any time.
